ToadNews v1.0 Intro
------------------
Here lies a brief description of my leaf-node Usenet news software, that I am
submitting to your archive.
Included in this Compacted and binhex'd file are:
a) the ToadNews program itself
b) the ToadNews online documentation program
c) a ToadNews Release Notes text file
Enjoy!
Thanks,
- John
What Is ToadNews?
----------------
ToadNews provides Macintosh users running a UUCP package (such as Dave Platts
UUPC 3.0) with the ability to be leaf-node Usenet sites. A Usenet leaf-node
usually does not relay news other nodes, with the exception of the node that
feeds it news (called the newsfeed).
ToadNews itself takes newsbatches sent from the newsfeed and then unbatches
(and de-compresses if necessary) and puts the news into the appropriate
directory for retrieval by your favourite newsreader or text-editor.
Some features of ToadNews include:
A news unbatcher that can manually unbatch newsbatches (via the File menu or
by drag & dropping newsbatches onto the ToadNews program icon). The
unbatcher
can also be configured to look in a user-configurable folder for new
newsbatches and automatically unbatch news.
Handles both uncompressed & compressed newsbatches from newsfeeds running
both B-News and C-News software. Decompression of newsbatches compressed
with 12 to 16-bit compress is supported provided that ToadNews can allocate
enough memory to perform the decompression. ToadNews will automatically
determine which type of newsbatch is dealing with and perform the necessary
operations to extract the Usenet news. Among the current formats supported
are #! rnews (B-News uncompressed default format), #! cunbatch
(B-News & INN compressed default format), and straight "compress"ed
(C-News default format) batches.
Flexible cross-posted articles handling. The user can configure ToadNews to
save hard drive space by using aliases instead of duplicating articles, or
can choose to ignore cross-posted articles totally.
News articles are saved in Macintosh text-editor readable format, with all
Usenet header information intact. In addition, you can tell ToadNews to
generate message header information files which can be used by newsreaders
to speed up the loading of newsgroup subject lists.
A news expirer which removes old Usenet news from your hard drive. The
expirer can be configured to run automatically after a user-configurable
interval of time has expired (ie: once a day), and/or after the free hard
disk space on your spool volume falls below a certain percentage of its
total disk space (ie: run every time the free space on your hard disk falls
below 25% of its capacity).
Flexible expiry support. Each newsgroup can be configured to have a
different expire period (in days), independent of other newsgroups.
An active newsgroup list editor, which allows the user to control the flow
of news in all active newsgroups.
Runs as a background process under System 7. ToadNews will run in the
background and quietly unbatch & expire news in the background.
Support for System 7. Since ToadNews runs under System 7 only, it
understands basic AppleEvents (Open Application, Open Document, and Quit
Application), drag & drop files, balloon help, and aliases.
Integrates well with UUPC and rnMac (which are almost required pieces of
software for use with ToadNews). Support for other programs such as Gnuucp
and TheNews are being worked on at this time.
Cheap software. At the Shareware cost of $25, you get a useable, useful
piece of UNIX/Macintosh interconnectivity. It's even cheaper than $25 if
you choose to exercise the other purchasing options available.
Hardware Requirements:
---------------------
(1) You will need at least a Macintosh Plus or higher machine running
AT LEAST System 7.x.
(2) You will need a hard drive. The bigger the better.
(3) A modem is a must, since UUCP usually transports newbatches through
serial lines.
(4) A UUCP newsfeed. A "newsfeed" is the machine that relays Usenet news to
your machine via UUCP. Without it, this program is absolutely pointless.
Software Requirements:
---------------------
(1) A UUCP engine, I highly recommend Dave Platt's UUPC 3.0, available from
any good FTP site or BBS. (such as sumex-aim.stanford.edu
To use ToadNews you must have a UUCP engine up and running. ToadNews does
not handle the transport of newsbatches from machine to machine. It is up
to the UUCP engine to perform this job. If you don't have a UUCP engine,
you can get a copy of Dave Platt's UUPC 3.0 from MOST good BBS's or well
stocked FTP sites. You must have UUPC 3.0 running properly before you try
to use ToadNews -- after all whats the point without any news to work on.
You can also use Gnuucp for the macintosh The current version that is
available is 4.3. You can get both UUCP engines from
sumex-aim.stanford.edu via FTP. However, not much testing has been done
using ToadNews and Gnuucp. It may take some fiddling to get things
working OK.
(2) A Usenet newsreaders (or very flexible text-editor). One such newsreader
is Roy Wood's "rnMac". Other newsreaders will support ToadNews, including
Bill Cramer's "TheNews".
ToadNews is brought to you by:

I'm afraid I don't agree, Alan. Sure, the full 040 doesn't do
transcendental functions directly. However, the FPU (or the FPU portion of
the 040) still does most of the work if one is present (as in the full
040). After all, we're still dealing with floating point numbers here!!
Besides, one of the major advantages (THE major advantage, in my opinion)
of the 040 is its integrated FPU, which outperforms the 88x (the FPU
accompanying the 030) so much more than the 040 (minus the FPU) does the
030.

I, too, was bitten by Apple's 32-bit enabler that doesn't. My wife's Mac
II, FDHD upgrade, DayStar 40MHz 030 and fpu, System 7.1, didn't much
take to that enabler.
It installed fine. The Memory control panel offered 32-bit addressing
as an option and claimed 32-bit addressing was on (after reboot). Wrong!
About This Mac says 20M, with system taking 16M and 4M available. This
pretty much tells me that at least part of the system is lying to me. I
suspect it is the "enabler" part.
It's a good thing I kept a copy of MODE32.
Wonderful job, Apple! Y'all should have hired the job out to Connectix.
Your enabler works on my office IIcx, but it is a piece of used food on
at least one other type machine that it should have worked on. What idiot
tested that enabler? Should he or she still have a job?

I have also been having problems with the

Connectix is looking into this, but haven't had the

Virtual 3...v 3.0.0 and v3.0.1.
My mac is doing the
greyscreen/happymac/greyscreen/happymac

than the mac spacing out when the menu bar
region appears and the finder is about to
appear. I have ripped out all inits (extensions)
and narrowed it down to the 32-bit enabler
and Virtual 3.0 on my mac...your mileage may
vary...i have tried it both with and without the
connectix enabler patch, but no difference.
I have a suspicision that the 32-bit enabler isn't
exactly working right.
Anyone else have a clue?

A few days ago, I replied to a post indicating that the version 1.2
ROM upgrade for the Mac II was available as an exchange separately
>From the FDHD SWIM Kit upgrade. I posted this information after
checking with our Customer Service group. Apparently there was a
misunderstanding and I was given erroneous information.
The version 1.2 ROMs which are necessary for the 32-bit System
Enabler are NOT available outside of the FDHD kit which is rather
expensive. I am looking into what it would take to make these
parts avaiable, but apparently they are no longer even in production.
Let me point out that this ONLY affects the Mac II, and it must
already have a PMMU installed for the 32-bit System enabler to work
in any event.
Those of you claiming to have troubles with other machines (SE/30,
IIx, or IIcx) are NOT affected by this. Remember, the System
Enabler, unlike Mode 32, is NOT a Control Panel Device and should NOT
be put into the Control Panels folder. It should be put at the root
level of the System Folder. If it is left in the Control Panels folder,
it will have NO EFFECT.

With ATM, you have access to huge collections of PostScript Type 1 fonts.
Sure, a number of PostScript libraries are being converted to TrueType (due
to the success of Window 3.x), but the most popular Adobe library will
remain PostScript-only for the foreseeable future.

Admittedly there are few. You might try REDT, which is a VMS EDT
pseudo-clone with extensions and a character (curses-based) menuing system.
Part of the 2-17-93 announcement follows:
REDT version 2.2.2 can be found at the following FTP sites.
(The FTP site administrator hasn't moved the distribution in to an
accessable location yet, try again in a couple of days).
redt222.tar is the source code and support files.
redtami222.tar is the compiled Amiga version and support file.
swedishchef.lerc.nasa.gov in the /editors directory redt222.tar only
The following sites might not be ready for a couple of days:
nestroy.wu-wien.ac.at redt222.tar and redtami222.tar
ftp.uga.edu redt222.tar and redtami222.tar
There is also an editor called crisp, which is purported to be a Brief
clone. I think it went commercial a while ago, but I believe that there
are still old versions of it hanging around the Net. I tried to archie it,
but they're all busy here. Try from your end.
If you have an Silicon Graphics console on your desk, SGI recently released
a new verison of their inhouse editor called Zip, a Jot replacement, which
is REALLY zippy AND follows the Mac conventions for the standard shortcut
keys, using the Alt instead of the Command. Very nice, available free,
>From sgi.com. Unfortunately 8(, it is GL-based (part of why it's so zippy)
and therefore can't run on anything else, even an Xwin display.

Yes, this Adobe almost-free offer does also hold for European countries, at
least for Norway, Sweden, Finland, Danemark, Iceland, Germany, Holland,
Belgium, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Switzerland,
Austria and Italy. I found it in the ReadMe I got with an upgrade kit I
bought of the Catalan (sic) version of system 7.1 software (which I have not
yet installed given the many problems it seems to have). Apple dealers even
have Apple-printed forms. You must send a letter (or fax it if you pay by
VISA, AMEX, MASTERCARD) with personal identification, a phone where you can
be reached (they asked me my ``tax identity'') , the language of ATM you
prefer (English, GErman, French, that's all) to:
Adobe Systems Europe BV
ATM/Apple Offer
POBox 56
Livingston EH54 7AE
United Kingdom
Fax 44-506-441-344
Or you can even make your order by phone to 44-506-440-144. They even spoke
Spanish. The price is around $20 plus VAT and import taxes.
I have not yet received it.

Subject: Frozen trackball on Startup of Duo 230
I recently got a Duo 230 with full size dock, which is quite a nice
system.
However I have a problem on the first startup after docking the Duo.
My mouse-trak 3-button trackball is not recognized over the desktop
bus and niether is a Kensington trackball. In both cases if the
desktop bus is disconnected and reconnected everything works fine, I
have been told however that this is a dangerous maneuvre. That aside
the situation is annoying in the extreme. There is no problem on
subsequent restarts until the Duo is undocked and redocked. I have
the system enabler 201 v1.0.1 as required and have tried going back to
the original system enabler v1.0. In addition, I have tried using
the normal Apple supplied mouse, which works fine (which makes it even
more annoying since I do not have room for the mouse).
My question is: Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so
does anyone know what the solution is? I will be pursueing the
problem with my supplier etc. and will report back a solution to the
board.

The ftp by mail server you want to use is:
ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com
To get started, send a mail message to the server, containing
the line,
help
The server will mail you back a file of instructions, with some
basic examples in it.
Please note that the files you receive will fill your mailbox
really quickly. They'll also take up spool space on other
machines as they're forwarded. Therefore, if you can possibly use
a real ftp server, do so. It's faster and more efficient.

Sure. Get yourself a copy of StuffIt Expander from your favorite
FTP site (like sumex-aim). StuffIt Expander is a freeware product from
Aladdin Systems which will handle all of the formats that you mentioned (and
a couple more ;) and can be used in a drag & drop mode for System 7 (or a

Howdy folks,
I was wondering if any of you can help me with a curious problem involving a
Powerbook 140, an Imagewriter I and a home-made cable.
The Imagewriter used to work fine with an old 512KE then this friend of mine
wanted to use it with his Powerbook. I figured out the connections for a cable
and soldered one together. Now the Imagewriter started developing the curious
habit of not transporting the paper properly a few times on a page. During
the self-test the printer does not display such a problem.
Could the problem lie with the cable?

Anyone noticed NowMenu's 'annoying habit' to dictate what font must be used
to to display menus (Apple and launch menus) ? It is actually documented as a
feature, but sadly *can't* be disabled ... the font selected in the pop-up
menu on the right in the control panel is *always* used menu displays (!).
This isn't a problem until you install different keyboards, with different
fonts and different scripts. Then, instead of the language name in the
keyboard menu being displayed in its own font, its displayed in Chicago (or
whatever other font you selected in the cp) ending up by showing mostly in
squares (unprintables).
I installed the Russian keyboard and associated resources in my system, just
to see how one could switch from one scripts to another, from one language to
another. Works just great, except that the language name appearing in the
keyboard menu doesn't show up properly - NowMenu forces it to use Chicago :-(
Would be nice if that option (formerly feature under 7.0.x) was presented as
a check box, and not as radio buttons, or that an additional entry was made
to the radio cluster (as 'None', e.g), letting the user disable this
'feature'.
Are Now Software planning a patch for this ?
PS: don't get me wrong, i love the Now package - couldn't do without it :-)

From: "Dwight Lemke @ Wisconsin Oshkosh" <LEMKE@vaxa.cis.uwosh.edu>
For the last two weeks, I haven't been able to hold
a charge in the battery. It will even give me all three low power
warnings
WITH the power adapter plugged in. Then I have to put it to sleep.
The problem is a manufacturing defect that I've seen on
several PB100's. When the circuit board was soldered,
insufficient solder was deposited on the power connector,
leaving only a very thin bridge of solder holding it
in place. (There is no other mechanical connection holding
the connector in). In addition, due to the straight plug
>From the power connector, there's a fair amount of leverage,
so just bumping it against your leg as you work on your lap
is enough to put a fair bit of torque on it. A 90-degree
plut would have been smarter.
Over time, this solder bridge will fatigue and break. The
result is that it will only charge if you apply pressure
in such a way as to result in the pins on the connector
contacting the circuit board. (I found that by pulling up
on the connector and slightly to one side, I could work).
The solution is to either disassemble it and solder it properly, or
send it back to Apple for them to fix. (They'll replace the
circuit-board). I recommend the latter, unless you're both highly
competent and desperatly unwilling to give up your powerbook for a
couple days.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that the "charging indicator"
detects only the presence of the plug, *NOT* that there's any
voltage on it.

Subject: PB100 Power Problem
Some quick observations:
1) Some extension cords and wall outlets can be rather flaky. If your
system runs down and still plugged into the mains, use Edison to
see whether the machine is actually receiving volts from the charger.
(Look for the ligning bolt.) Jiggle the adapter to see if it is plugged
in solidly.
2) My PB100 battery never supplied more than 40 min of power, even when
new, and now, 6 mo later, the original battery is only good for 10 to
15 minutes. It runs out so quickly that the system shuts off without
any warnings. The SLA battery is very susceptible to cold, too.
3) My system is not under warranty anymore because I installed my
own memory upgrade myself. If you did the same you've voided your
warranty too.

Subject: RE; Turning off PrintMonitor in Public Labs
To summarize the various responses and my own answer to the problem
of preventing background printing for various reasons:
- several people suggested altering the resources of Chooser so that
selecting Background printing was not possible. No one was able to
specify exactly which resources so I punted that one. Here is a case
where the hidden-resource, you-have-to-have-a-LOT-of-detailed-
technical-knowledge-to-change-something-simple model of the Mac fails.
So I punted that idea.
- several people suggested deleting PrintMonitor entirely. Each person
thought something different would happen if you did so. One reported
that the Mac continues to try to print in the Background anyway and hangs.
The truth is the following:
- deleting Print Monitor has no effect on the Chooser's awareness
of Background Printing UNTIL YOU DO A RESTART. Presumably
PrintMonitor is in the Extensions folder because it sort of acts
like one. That is, its presence is noted at boot-time and not
checked again.
- After Restarting, Chooser became aware that PrintMonitor was
not available and, sure enough, the Background printing
radio buttons were greyed out and unselectable.
Thus, the simplest answer seems to be to delete PrintMonitor and then
Restart the system.
My thanks to all who responded. It will make life easier in our public labs,
which have needs and situations much different from private offices or homes.

I did this about a week ago without a hitch. In Word 5.0, I saved
a document in WordPerfect 5.1 format, transferred it to my PC and
opened it in WordPerfect 5.0. The dean in our college is about to
submit an article to a publication which requires all submissions to
be in WordPerfect 5.1 format, and all of the offices I support are
Mac-o-nized (with the exception of a couple of PeeEss 2s, one of which
is in my office). So the dean contacted me to help him do this.
I hate to be one of those "well, it works for me..." individuals,
but it does! It might help if you give a little background on your
configuration: what system, what Mac, how much memory, and what
extensions (INITs) and control panels you're using. It's likely that
it's a conflict with something that's been loaded at startup. I've got
a IIcx, running System 7.1, 8 MB RAM, and a ton of things loading at
startup. (When you write back, give specifics about what YOU have
loading; I didn't list all of mine, because MINE works! ;-)

I have met this kind problem too. But later I find that it only happens when I
try to save the document as WordPerfect file direcetly into a IBM floppy disk,
some times, word5.x even crashes when I open a WP5.1 file directly from IBM
floppy disk. It works fine for me if I save the document as WP5.1 file into my
hard disk first and then copy them to IBM floppy disk, and do the same thing
for open a WP5.1 file. I don't know the reasons behind this.

Hi Steve --- re your request for TEXAS, I wrote it ca. 1988 and it has

complete inverted indices for arbitrarily-large text files; adds various
